I am a passionate runner, an outdoor enthusiast (or a 'Skogsmulle' as we say in Swedish) and an experimental foodist. I hit the road, the gym and the Pilates studio as often as I can, but I truly find my inner peace when I spend time close to the nature; either in the forest, by the ocean or high up on a mountain peak.
I was born in South Korea, adopted to Sweden where I grew up with my parents, older brother and a bunch of dogs and cats. Twenty years later, I moved to Norway where I spent the next seven years. In 2011 I transplanted to San Francisco, California, where I now live together with my Norwegian husband.
I'm a born optimist with an unbeatable positive mind. I believe that people are responsible for their own health and happiness, but sometimes we may need some guidance to find our inner power. I also have a deep believe in trusting the process of life. When you are ready, awesome things will happen to you, but that doesn't mean that you can't or shouldn't actively work towards your dreams and goals. Of course you should! But stay open for the opportunities that come across your way.
I'm a book nerd - and have always been. I collect books, especially cook books, but I never follow a single recipe from top to bottom. I became a vegetarian when I was 15 years old, but after years of experimenting, I nowadays eat whatever my body tells me it needs. If you want a definition of what I am, I would say I'm a foodist, a wannabe locavore and a flexitarian.
I'm a Registered Nurse holding a Master degree in Critical Care Nursing. I've loved every second of my nursing job, and still do. But after working in an acute hospital setting for ten years, I woke up one day and realized that it was time to add something more.
A couple of things led me towards health coaching. Firstly, I heard a talk of Dr. James Pawelski about Positive Psychology, who talked about putting on the red or the green cape (as in superman cape), where the red cape let you stop bad things in the world, while the green cape let your grow good things. The thought of focusing on helping good things to grow (eg. health and wellness), instead of always fighting the bad (sickness and illnesses), completely threw me away. I was intrigued by the thought, and felt that this way of thinking was completely new to me, even if I am a self-declared optimist.
I then attended a talk with Dr. Dean Ornish who talked about creating a health care system based on the patients' needs and desires instead of the society's preferences. He talked about meeting the patients where they where (in state of mind, goals and resources), instead of where we wanted them to be and let them create a lifestyle important to them.
Everyday I watched people struggle to know what to eat, when to eat, how much to eat and in general how to live their lives. They were forcing themselves to go to the gym, go for a run or eat kale - even if they hate it - just because they thought that was the right way of living. And they felt miserable, wondering why they neither lost those extra pounds nor felt happy or fulfilled.
I have always believed that living healthy actually is our natural way of being, and if it is natural it shouldn't be a burden or a hassle, right? If going to the gym, eating kale or eating Paleo feels like a punishment, it is probably not your way of living. I have a deep desire to show people how simple healthy living really can be as long as you listen to your body, your mind and spirit, and decide to create a lifestyle that fits with your needs, not anyone else's.
So I decided to create a career based on what I had (a nursing degree), what I loved to do (running, doing Pilates, cooking, eating, living healthy and being active), and how I wanted to live my life (traveling, free and in control of my own time). Health By You grew from an vague idea and a dream to a reality.
Health By You's mission is to simplify health, wellness and fitness, and to make it fun and desirable. I truly believe that everyone can make healthy choices in their everyday lives, and my goal is to show that a healthy lifestyle is not about being perfect 24/7, but more about taking control over you own life and finding a balance.
